Thanks to a group of photographers who wanted to know how to make photo books, I made this one-off thing, an introductory bookbinding class. The initial plan was to be done in four hours, and at 23:00, we were done!
It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that moving to the Netherlands has changed my life. I've been teaching bookbinding and making books for years, but this year was the first (and the second) time I participated in a proper bookbinding fair.
This happens again and again. Time after time. Every evening before a new class, I’m feeling a great anxiety about what will happen tomorrow. Even while I’m absolutely sure what to show my new students, and historically 99% of students are happy with the results, I’m really worried and nervous.
I love my students. They are smart. They are creative and inventive. They listen (and do not listen) and they always try to do their best. Yesterday I had another wonderful class, and I’m in a wonderful mood once again =)
This October marks the beginning of the third year I’m teaching bookbinding. Being a bookbinder for almost a decade, I have never thought to give lessons. Well, at least before a friend of mine asked me to show her and her photography colleagues some basics on how to make photo-books.
A bookbinding exposition at the Brussels’ Fine Arts Academy of St. Gilles opens 19th of November, 2015. It was proposed to celebrate 20th anniversary of creation of the binding and guilding workshop here at the Academy.
