Several days ago I was approached by a woman, whose grandfather was an amateur bookbinder in Soviet times. He left her some bookbinding stuff no one in the family is obviously is going to use. She didn’t even want to sell the stuff, just to pass it to someone, who could put it to good use.
I had my personal happy moment today. Several days ago, I received my first order from Australia. As usual, I went to my workshop on Thursday and made the rounding tool I had to send. And today it was shipped!

Last Sunday I’ve tried an unusual role. For 18 months, since my studying days at the American Academy of Bookbinding in July 2015, I’ve been a teacher. Now, however, I became a student once again. Another important thing was that there was a new teacher in my own workshop — a gold tooling and book restoration master Eduard Illarionov.

This 17th century map was found in a chimney in Scotland. Map was so deteriorated, it seemed almost impossible to be restored. However, specialists from the National Library of Scotland have succeeded in recovering everything that was salvageable for this historical object.

I’ve used quite a lot of starch paste during the past few months. I’m working on a book repair project and it goes not as fast as I’d like it to. However, I that gave me a chance to experiment with different sorts of paste and to make the following video.
Azerbaijani artist Tünzale Memmedzade has transcribed Quran with silver and black ink on transparent black silk pages. This work took her 3 years to be made. She has used 50 meters of black to make the pages of the book (29 x 33 cm each in size).
