Colouring the Edges

The edges of every book must be in keeping with the binding. A half roar book should not have an expensive edge, neither a whole bound Morocco book a sprinkled edge. Still, no rule has been laid down in this particular, and taste should regulate this as it must in other branches. The taste of the public is so changeable that it is impossible to lay down any rule, and I leave my reader to his own discretion. Here are various ways in which the edges may be coloured. Documentary of a HK Craftsman: Siuyuett the Bookbinder

A ‘Mini’ BookBinding Documentary – The Creation Process

This fantastic video documents the work of Siuyuett Tsang (Teresa Tsang) during a bookbinding project.

Directed by Calvin Li and filmed by Kenji Wong the movie takes you through the various aspects of creating a book from scratch, including, in various degrees of detail, the following steps:

  • Preparing the signatures
  • Putting cloth on cover boards
  • Piercing signatures
  • Waxing the thread
  • Threading and sewing signatures using a sewing frame
  • Attaching cover boards
  • Weaving the spine spine
  • Adding the finishing touches

The documentary has been edited down to 5 minutes in duration from a total of 10+ hours of footage taken over 2 days.

12. Making Bookbinding Headbands Tutorial

This entry is part 12 of 12 in the series Introduction to Bookbinding

Headbanding is the process of strengthening the head of a book. This is done by the sewing a cord onto the backbone behind the boards, which secures the signatures together more firmly. The result is a stronger binding construction, and even the backbone can be prevented from damage.

A good video introduction into creating and sewing headbands can be found in this YouTube playlist.
