The Los Angeles Printers Fair will happen this Saturday, October 3, 2015. Fair starts at 10 am and continues until 4 pm. That’s a seventh year in a row for International Printing Museum in Carson, California, to hold this event.
Like many of my fellow bookbinders, I am mostly self-taught; we comb the internet for tips on binding techniques, sewing patterns and leather-versus-cloth options. This initial interest in book arts tends to begin with modern takes on traditional bindings. But after having bound a few works, it’s natural to want to move a bit further back in history, researching the origins and techniques of other book-related arts, such as marbled end papers.
We have a pretty thorough list of tutorials and bookbinding instructions here at iBookBinding.com. At least if you are interested in case binding and some non-adhesive types of bindings. Today we start posting new tutorials. Sometimes they would cover some very small steps of bookbinding process.
Winners of the Premio a las Mejores Encuadernaciones Artísticas (an award presented for the best artistic binding by the government of Spain) were announced recently. The book of choice this year was a Spanish edition of the Marks of Identity (Señas de identidad) by an award winning author Juan Goytisolo. The book depicts Spanish society in the quarter of a century that follows the Spanish Civil War. Structure of the book is not a standard one, with whole sections entirely without punctuation.
Okay, we start a new endeavor to the New World today. As I wrote before, we have plans to translate iBookBinding. First posts were published in Russian, and today we launch our Portuguese (Brazilian) version.
As an author there is nothing quite like the day when the printers send you that first proof copy of your work. You have dreamed of this day for years as you have spent countless hours agonizing over if the proper verb use is “seems” or “seem” in the third line of the fourth paragraph in the 20th chapter and you have changed it back and forth so many times you no longer remember which version is actually in the book!!

As we wrote almost a month ago, we have lots of plans to write more about different bookbinding techniques not only in English but in other languages. First posts in Russian have already appeared on our web site (hope the community wasn’t startled). We would also proceed with translating the old posts.
This summer brings us a new bookbinding contest. The American Academy of Bookbinding (AAB) announced this July a new triennial fine binding competition OPEN • SET.
On this day, 24th of August, 1456, Johannes Gutenberg finished making the first book in Europe using movable type. Quires were printed in 1455 (or even before). There is a letter by Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini (future pope Pie II) dated 12 March 1455, that suggests that pages were already printed.
A little more than 24 hours left to bid on 204 lots of bookbinding tools and equipment sold by Bindery Tools, LLC (Myerstown, PA). I myself like some of the items, but delivery overseas would cost more than tools themselves.
I’m definitely not a Jack of one trade. Am I a bookbinder? Not really. I love bookbinding. For almost a year, I’ve been teaching bookbinding basics workshops in Moscow. However, it’s been a few years now since I made my living binding books. Programmer? Wrong again. I never became a true programmer. Other jobs I had (and have) include journalist, editor and translator. For almost five years, I was a CEO and one of the owners of a board game publishing and distribution company.
Two years ago I decided to start a website dedicated to bookbinding, it was an enjoyable journey but as the days went by I found myself having less and less time to add new posts and maintain the site, this was especially true the past few months where I’ve found myself becoming more absorbed in other projects and so I decided it might be time to start looking for a new owner…
