Screenprinting is quick, colourful and can be as sophisticated or as simple as you like. Learn to screenprint base colours and add a second layer with simple paper stencils. You will also be shown how to coat and expose a photo-screen and overprint onto your base colours to pull it all together.

Mokuhanga is perfect for artists interested in a non-toxic, table-top, meditative printmaking technique. Over one weekend learn how to make two different types of hardback book from scratch. You will begin by learning how to sew single pages onto tapes to make a book with an intricate, visible spine and hard front and back covers. Then you will go on to make a traditional hard-back cloth bound book complete with endpapers, headbands and a bookmark ribbon. The course is ideal for those who already have some experience of making books but is also suitable for anyone who has no previous book binding experience. After completion of the course you will never want to buy your own note- or sketchbook ever again.

David Armes spent summer 2015 travelling across the US visiting letterpress studios, printmakers and colleges on a Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. Starting in Portland, Oregon, he traced a route eastwards via Iowa, the twin cities, Chicago, the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Wisconsin, Detroit, New York state, Boston, Washington DC, finally finishing in Baltimore, Maryland, 11 weeks and over 25 studios later. Along the way he met fine artists, lifetime jobbing printers, Linotype operators, DIY punkers and a 71 year-old letterpress teacher with a collection of over a thousand platen presses. Join us as David recounts the many stories he uncovered about the vibrant American letterpress scene.

Two Colour Textile Repeat Pattern (£130.00 / £110.00 members)

This weekend course will cover the process of composing a design as a repeat pattern for screen printing onto fabric. We will split this design over two layers so that the pattern is made up of two colours. Participants will expose designs onto screen using the photo screen technique and consider the quirks of screen printing onto fabric. The printed textiles you produce could be made up into bags, cushions or other accessories.

Work directly on a screen through drawing and painting and the clever use of stencils, fillers and special screen drawing fluid. This 4 week course will help you make really vibrant images, working quickly and without the aid of photo-screenprinting. It is direct, immediate and a whole lot of fun.
Copperplate Etching (£130.00 / £110.00 members)

Etch with ferric chloride on copper. Artist Andrew Hambleton will show you the intricacies and special qualities of line and clean wiping of the plate. Ferric is also a mordant that gives off no fumes so can be used safely in your own studio. This course can bring a whole new inspiration and impetus to even the most experienced etcher, but is also suited to those new to etching.
Multi-Block Relief Printing (£130.00 / £110.00 members)

Fun with lino! Design, cut and ink 3 separate blocks of lino and overprint in different colours. Overlapping will create another colour and a really complex print. Ink in semi-transparent colours to highten the effect. Along the way learn to register exactly on top of each block and use our wonderful Albions and Columbian presses. The resulting prints will be varied and wonderful.
Clamshell Box Workshop (£130.00 / £110.00 members)

Over the course of a weekend you will learn how to make a bespoke clamshell box from scratch. The box can be any size up to A4 and made to house an object, book or collection of prints of your choice. Learn how to measure and construct the trays that will hold the work. Then you will go on to cover them with your choice of coloured book cloth, line them with beautiful Esme Winter paper and finally make the outer case that will hold it all together.

Master the art of photo-etching. Using Photec film and the revolutionary water-slide method learn to get perfect results every time. Once on the plate and partially stripped the image can be etched and aquatinted at different stages building up subtleties and intricacies. A final stripping of the plate will allow you to further develop your plate with etched lines and more tonal work.

Be creative with paper and develop the 2D page into 3D pop-ups. You will be introduced to various folding techniques and simple book structures such as zig-zag & pamphlet bindings. With opportunity to practise and produce a number of models that will provide you with a good working knowledge of the materials and techniques required to enable you to develop your pop-up skills within the book form.
Boxmaking

You will be introduced to construction techniques enabling you to make a slip-case, drop-back box and a phase box to a set size. Through the making of these structures you should be able to leave the course with a good working knowledge of the materials and techniques required to develop your box making skills for future work.
Workshop 1 – Simple book structures

This will be a hands-on workshop in which Clare will introduce you to the book form through a series of simple but effective book structures. From folded forms through to three-hole stitched books and stab bindings. She will show examples of books by artists and photographers and discuss appropriate materials to use and the importance of grain direction. Participants will make several hand made books that can be taken away to be used as models for exploring and developing their own photobooks.
This workshop is appropriate for beginners just starting out with an interest in making books by hand, and those with more experience who want to extend or refresh their skills.
Workshop 2 – Multi-sectioned stitched books
Saturday 25 July, 10.00 – 16.30 at West Dean
Exclusive to London Independent Photography members | 15 places | £40
In this one-day workshop you will make two multi-sectioned non-adhesive books. Folding paper into several sections you will stitch them together using the Coptic binding method with board covers decorated using inkpads. In the afternoon you will sew sections onto card tapes, which will then be threaded onto a folded card cover. Clare will show examples and talk through the methods of pagination and planning involved in multi-section books.
This workshop is appropriate for beginners just starting out with an interest in making books by hand, and those with more experience who want to extend or refresh their skills.
